The Charbonneau Arts Association will donate $4000 each to the art program at Canby and Wilsonville High Schools in an Award Reception at Charbonneau Country Club, Sunday, January 12, 2020, 2 to 4 p.m. Sponsors, volunteers, participating artists and artisans, students, teachers, principals, and their spouses are invited to attend.
According to Eric Hoem, President, these donations represent proceeds from the 2019 Charbonneau Art Festival, which was held November 1 to 3, 2019, with attendance that topped 1,000 patrons for the first time in its 35 year existence.
The Charbonneau Arts Association is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is providing an exhibit opportunity and financial support for these two student art programs.
“We believe that art education is an essential part of high school education; however, it has received less public funding in recent years, and so our organization has come forward to help,” says Hoem.
At Wilsonville High School, 400-480 students take art classes each semester, reports teacher Christopher Shotola-Hardt. “We have designated a special account to help cover entry fees and tuitions for competitions and workshops for our students, opportunities for young artists outside the normal classroom routines and in-house exhibitions,” Shotola-Hardt says.
“We want to continue supporting students getting involved in the Scholastic Art Awards. We have also talked about bringing in special presenters and artists whose skill sets and work is different than that of any of us,” he adds.
Canby High School serves more than 600 students in art education classes, says teacher Jennifer Dorsey. With past donations from the Charbonneau Art Association, the Canby art program has funded field trips and purchased equipment that is not possible with their ordinary funding.
Dorsey also reports, “Recently a portion of the donation has gone into our CHS Visual Arts Scholarship for a graduating CHS student who is majoring in Visual Art in college.”
“None of these activities and large equipment purchases would be possible without the donations over the years from the Charbonneau Arts Association,” she concludes.
