QUILT SHOW: Old Aurora Colony Museum Will Be “Seeing Stars” October 12-21
Do you love quilts and history? Would you like to have stars in your eyes? The Aurora Colony Historical Society invites you to see nearly 100 antique, vintage and modern quilts in the charming setting of the Old Aurora Colony Museum during its 46th Annual Quilt Show, with the theme “Seeing Stars.” The show runs October 12-21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is $7.50 for individuals; groups of 10 or more are $5 per person.
Quilts will be on display throughout the museum’s five-building village complex in downtown Aurora. Quilts hang from the ceilings and walls, are draped over benches, and are displayed on the beds handcrafted by Aurora Colony craftsmen. This year’s theme features quilts with star patterns, but other patterns will be shown as well. Members of the Old Aurora Colony Quilters and other quilting experts will demonstrate quilting skills for those who would like to learn new techniques.
In the historic Steinbach log cabin, guests can relax over a cup of cider or coffee and nibble on cookies. The cabin also hosts a country store filled with quilting supplies and fabrics, sewing notions, unfinished objects, and even some quilts — all at bargain prices.
One of the show’s crowd favorites is the annual raffle quilt that connects each year’s show to the next. At last year’s show, participants entered red, black and white blocks in a block contest with the 2018 show theme, Seeing Stars. The Old Aurora Colony Quilters judged the entries and selected 20 blocks, which they assembled and hand-quilted into this year’s raffle quilt. Tickets are available at the museum until the end of the quilt show and a winner will be drawn at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 21. Winners need not be present to win. Raffle tickets range in price from $1 for one ticket, to $25 for 50 tickets.
At the same time, blue and white blocks are now being accepted at the museum for the 2018 block contest. Entries will be accepted at the museum through 4 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2018. Submitted blocks, which will be judged for next year’s raffle quilt, will be on display during this year’s show prior to judging. The theme for next year’s show (and this year’s block contest) is Rhapsody in Blue. Complete rules for the contest are at www.auroracolony.org under the What’s New section.
