Champoeg State Heritage Area is hosting the 175 anniversary Founders’ Day Celebration honoring the 52 men who, in 1843, voted for the first provisional government west of the Mississippi River. Founders Day has been held at Champoeg at the memorial pavilion since 1901. This will be a full day’s event from 10:00 am till 3:00pm. Activities will include reenacted fur trappers camp, a replica town site with trades such as blacksmith, wheel wrights, wood workers and barrel makers and an event Post Office. There will be souvenir post cards and an official stamp commemorating the event.
At 1:00 pm there will be a solemn ceremony to honor the 52 men with a combined VFW and police color guard quest speakers, a mock vote, honored descendants and a reading of a roll call of honor followed by a rifle salute. Afterwards there will be light refreshments, a group photo and an opportunity for folks to meet. The event will culminate at 3:00pm with a live stage coach recreating a mail run taking our post cards to the St Paul post office.
